Greenfield Port
Client: Krishnapatnam Port Co. Ltd.
Location: East Coast India, Andhra Pradesh
Krishnapatnam, in Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh, is the site for a Greenfield Port being developed by Krishnapatnam Port Co. Ltd. through a mandate from the Government of Andhra Pradesh.
The site is ideally located at 14o 15’ N, 80o 08’ E, 150 Km North of Chennai, with the advantage of a proximal, congestion free connectivity to the national transport network.
The marine infrastructure is designed for deepening to ultimately receive up to 200,000 DWT vessels with protection for round-the-year operation.
Over 30 berths with a total quay length of 10.35 Km and a back-up area of 4,000 acres have been planned to provide modern facilities for
- Bulk Terminals for coal, iron ore, etc.
- Container Terminals
- Petrochemicals & Other Liquids (P.O.L.)
- Ship Building & Repair Facilities
Concomitant with development of the port are plans for facilitating support and ancillary infrastructure, townships, road networks and port-based projects such as power plants and tank farms.
Howe India was engaged as Consultant and Project Manager for:
- Preparation of the Port Master Plan
- Design and Detailed engineering services for Phase-I
- Project management and Technical Services during the Construction Period of Phase-I
- Development of future Phases with domestic and international investment
The Phase I plans catered to annual throughputs of

| Coal | 3 to 7 million MT |
| General Cargo | 1.5 million MT |
The port is earmarked for coal import @ 12 MTPA for the Ultra Mega Power Plant and a conceptual plan has been built-in as a near future requirement.
The initial deepening of the water area was planned to be carried out to the extent of –13.2 M C.D. to accommodate vessels of up to 65,000 DWT, which could be deepened upto –19.8 m at the berth in future. Two breakwaters, combined length of 2600 m was planned to provide the required tranquility for over the year operation.
