Facilities For Export Of Alumina & Import Of Caustic Soda Through The Port Of Visakhapatnam

HOWE designed and supervised the construction of facilities for export of Alumina and import of Caustic Soda from the existing berth WQ5 in the Visakhapatnam Inner Harbour through 35000 DWT vessels for National Aluminium Company Ltd. (NALCO)’s Plant in Orissa. Storage and other associated facilities required for the project are located in the area available near the berth. The port facilities were designed with provision for expansion to cater to the needs of a future expansion. The facility handles 0.375 million TPA of Alumina and 0.12 million TPA of Caustic Soda initially with provision for handling 1.175 million TPA of Alumina and 0.243 million TPA of Caustic Soda ultimately. HOWE’s responsibility included complete Civil, Mechanical and Electrical design and Supervision of construction/erection works. The facilities included the following:

Civil Works:

  • Pre-stressed concrete Alumina Storage Silos, 2 Nos., each having 25,000 tonnes storage, constructed using the slip-form technique
  • 3 Nos. – 10000 Tonnes each Capacity Lined Concrete Storage Tanks for Caustic Soda storage
  • Conveyor structures for receiving and shipping systems totaling 1.0 km in length, including Structural Steel Transfer Towers, Closed Conveyor Galleries, Tunnels and other related Civil Works
  • Railway Receiving and Despatch Tracks
  • Compressed Air Station
  • Electrical Sub-station
  • Administration Building, Workshop, Canteen and Miscellaneous Buildings.
  • Site Grading and Drainage.

Mechanical Works:

  • Rail Wagon Unloading System adopting Fluidisation Technique- 1000 TPH (introduced for the first time in the country) to unload 3,75,000 Tonnes per annum of Alumina to Storage Tanks
  • Alumina Storage System adopting Fluidisation Technique- 1000 TPH
  • Belt Conveyors for Receiving and Shipping System 1 km long of capacity 2200 TPH
  • Alumina Withdrawal System with Fluidisation Technique from Silos for Shipping
  • Rail-mounted Shiploader, provided with Air Slides for conveying of Alumina – 2200 TPH
  • Dust Control System
  • Hoists, Lifts and auxiliary equipment
  • Wagon Haulage System for Alumina Handling
  • Marine arm for Caustic Soda (1 No.)
  • 500 TPH
  • Wagon Loading Arms for Caustic Soda (2 Nos.)
