Development Of Harbour Wall Berths (18-22) At Indira Dock, Mumbai Port

Client: Mumbai Port Trust

Location: Mumbai Port, Mumbai, India

HOWE prepared a Detailed Project Report for the proposed development of Harbour Wall Berths at Mumbai Port. The development is necessitated by the consistent international trend for usage of larger ships in the transportation of sea-borne cargo and the limitations imposed by the entrance lock to the Indira Dock on the size of the ship to a maximum of 180.0 m (LOA) x 25.5 m (Beam) x 9.0 m (Draft). The Harbour Wall Berths, located outside the entrance lock can be upgraded by suitable modifications, to deep-drafted berths, capable of berthing larger vessels (upto 100,000 DWT) which are presently unable to enter the lock due to size limitations.

HOWE’s Scope of Work broadly comprised

  • Critical review of the traffic forecast,
  • Identification of the main constraints to the required modifications and suggestions for suitable development options including deepening of the berths,
  • Comparison of the various development options in respect of the requirements of berthing, dredging, maintenance and provisions of suitable storage space,
  • Preparation of an implementation schedule,
  • Financial viability analysis

The Consultant’s salient recommendations were:

  • There is an urgent need to strengthen the Harbour Wall Berths,
  • Widening and deepening of the Harbour Wall Berths are technically and economically feasible,
  • The entire facility with ‘on top’ equipment should be created and operated by MbPT in preference to following the BOT route either partially or fully.
  • Project is under execution. Howe is the Consulting Engineers for execution of the work (including Capital Dredging) also.
