Location: Ennore Port
Ennore Port, located at 13o 15’ 16” N, 80o 21’ 22” E in the state of Tamil Nadu, India, has conceived to alleviate the impact on the city environment of Chennai by shifting bulk cargo operations related to Coal and Iron Ore. Chennai Port would then be able to further expand Container Handling capabilities. A Coal Berth at Ennore Port is in operation to meet the fuel requirements of North Chennai Thermal Power Station almost exclusively.
M/s Chettinad International Coal Terminal Private Limited (CICTPL), a special purpose vehicle, has been entrusted with the development and operation of a multi user coal terminal at Ennore Port under a B.O.T. Contract. HOWE is assisting CICTPL with engineering and project management services for
- Construction of a berth suitable for ship sizes upto 150,000 Dwt.
- Rail Mounted Grab type Ship Unloaders for Coal.
- Conveying, Storage and Reclaim Systems.
- Wagon and Truck Loading Arrangements.
- Related infrastructure including power distribution, lighting, workshop, gate complexes and other utility and administrative buildings.
The scope of work included the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) based on extensive studies followed by submission of Plans, Detailed Designs, Tender Schedules, Technical Specification, Project Implementation, Construction Supervision, Operation, Management Planing, Commission and Training.
The system is designed to receive 8,000,000 tonnes of coal annually. The receiving system would cater to a range of cargo types with in-built speed control with handling rates of 3500 TPH at the higher range. The despatch system has features such as
- In-motion rail car loading with in-motion weighing
- Batch loading of trucks
- Additional truck loading provisions in surge situation.
The salient elements of the Project comprise the following:

- Coal ship size : 80,000 DWT (max); 45,000 DWT (min)
- Size of berth : 325 M x 30 M
- Approach : 145 M x 8 M
- Stackyard (excluding railway) : 423,200 sq.m.
- Ship unloaders (2 Nos.) Grab Type : 1750 TPH each
- Stacker-cum-Reclaimer (2 Nos.): 2000 TPH each
